Interview Techniques
There is a lot that can be done to secure a job offer - it is useful to have a look at the various sources of advice on the web - especially if you haven't been for an interview for a while!
Here are a few tips - all pretty obvious - but worth stating:
Company Research
Pretty vital and nothing impresses more if you can display some knowledge of the business - the more knowledgeable you are about the company the more proactive and committed you will appear. Have a look at their web site, ask for a company brochure and scan the business press - you may find good (or bad) articles about them!
The Position
Important to know about the job description - we will ensure you have all the relevant information but don't hesitate to grill us if you feel that there is not enough.
Your Experience
Be sure you are totally aware of what is in your CV - try to re-visit every job described just to make sure nothing vital gets missed out at interview. Interviewers will want to see that you can present yourself confidently and make a good first impression, appear calm and confident under pressure and be assertive about your needs/requirements without being aggressive. If there are gaps in employment or you have not been in a job for long - take particular care to cover the reasons. Be positive.
Try to develop how your skills and experience would benefit the company.
Muse on how you can demonstrate that you have the key skills and experience necessary for the role - if giving examples relate them to your skills and experience such as decision making and problem solving, resilience and tenacity, confidence, planning and organisation, team work and commercial awareness - and show how they would benefit the company.
Dress code
Dress smartly and professionally - for women, ideally a matching suit, tights, court shoes, and understated make-up and jewellery. For men, a matching suit, tie and smart, clean shoes.
Body language
A firm handshake shows you are confident and a smile says I'm enthusiastic, friendly and approachable. Try and make regular eye contact and be confident and alert, try to calm any nerves. Speak slowly and clearly, taking time to think before you answer. Try not to talk too much and listen carefully, try not to get distracted. Maintain an open stance - avoid folding your arms or fidgeting.
Make sure you have thought of questions that are relevant to you about the company and the position - try to be positive and enthusiastic about the company. At the end of the interview always thank the interviewer and ask what the next stage of the process is.
Plan your journey - Obtain clear directions and plan your route in advance. Aim to arrive ten minutes early allowing plenty of time for the journey. If you are delayed for any reason, contact your consultant immediately who will telephone the client on your behalf.
